OVERLAND PARK — University of Kansas Edwards Campus (KUEC) Vice Chancellor David Cook has announced the appointment of Stuart Day, KU professor of Spanish, as KUEC’s new associate vice chancellor.

“I’m incredibly excited,” Cook said. “I’ve had the privilege of working with Stuart over the years, and I am thrilled to welcome him to our team. He is a first-class individual and educator as well as a respected researcher who will bring incredible experience and insight to this critical role.”

Day will lead a team of faculty and staff administrators that will focus on developing and enhancing workforce-related academic programs, increasing partnerships with KU-Lawrence and KU Medical Center, and building and deepening relationships with community colleges and other community partners. He will help lead the Edwards Campus innovation and DEI efforts, strategy and budgeting for academic program development, and lead or participate in other initiatives supporting KUEC’s nontraditional student population. The KU Edwards Campus recently unveiled its strategic plan for academic years 2019-20, and Day will play a major role in its implementation to help ensure overall student success.

“I’m truly honored and excited to join Dave Cook and the Edwards team,” Day said. “They are innovative, adaptive and committed to creating opportunities for broad constituencies. This is the ideal opportunity for me to apply what I’ve learned and acquire new skills from a dynamic group of people on this campus and across the state as we continue the important work of training the current and future workforce.”

With an anticipated start date in mid-May, Day will take the helm as Marilu Goodyear, the current associate vice chancellor at KUEC, returns to full-time faculty responsibilities in the School of Public Affairs & Administration after five years in the role. During her tenure, KUEC experienced growth in on-campus and online degree and certificate offerings, undergraduate and graduate enrollment, collaboration with KU-Lawrence and KU Medical Center and more.

“Marilu’s contributions are greatly appreciated and set a strong foundation for further progress,” Cook said. “I know Stuart will pick up where she leaves off and lead us well into the future.”

A prolific researcher and author, Day is a member of the KU Latina/o Studies Initiative and core faculty in the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies. He has served as senior vice provost for academic affairs, director of faculty programs in the Office of International Affairs, chair of the Graduate Studies and Undergraduate Committees, and associate chair and chair of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. He has a doctorate in Latin American literature from Cornell University, a master’s degree in Hispanic literature from the University of Arizona and a bachelor’s in Spanish and education from Northern Arizona University’s Center for Excellence in Education.

“I’m proud to add someone of Stuart’s caliber to the team and look forward to continuing with the momentum we’ve built over the years,” Cook said. “We will hit the ground running.”
