International Studies
Why International Studies?
In a 2006 report
[pdf], the Committee for Economic Development
concluded that “U.S. businesses are concerned with developing the workforce that they need for the United States economy to retain its position as the global leader. Foreign language skills, knowledge of other world regions and cultures, and overseas experience all contribute to creating the employee who has the cross-cultural competence needed by American businesses in the twenty-first century.”
KU’s Master of Arts in International Studies
is a 37-credit hour interdisciplinary degree designed for both working professionals and recent graduates who are seeking a better understanding of international issues that affect public policy, the economy, and culture as well as seeking to better position themselves for employment opportunities in a variety of sectors. Students pursue their interests through coursework
focused on various world regions and topic areas such as international politics, commerce, development, culture, and international conflict across a broad range of fields. An active student organization
contributes to the program by offering a variety of social and professional events.
Edwards Campus courses meet one night per week in the late afternoon or evening to help working adults balance their competing demands. The international studies coursework can be completed at the KU Edwards Campus; however, many students need to take one or more courses at the KU campus in Lawrence to finish the degree. The K-10 Connector
bus service facilitates travel between campuses.
