The Opportunity
The worlds of science and business are increasingly interconnected, creating strong demand for professionals who can combine scientific technical knowledge with skills in leadership, business and communications. The Science Manager Graduate Certificate, offered through KU Edwards Campus, is comprised of six eight-week academic courses, two credit hours each.This certificate is designed for scientists who have moved or anticipate moving into managerial roles in addition to their scientific duties. The certificate courses range from financial management to organizational communication. Upon successful completion of the 12 total credit hours, students will earn a graduate certificate.

The science manager certificate is ideal for:

  • Science professionals who already possess a degree in their field and need to master professional managerial skills without a full degree.
  • Graduate students in the biological, physical, and earth/environmental sciences who foresee a career in a science-oriented private company or governmental agency.

The Certificate
The certificate is comprised of six courses, two credit hours each, ranging from financial management to organizational communication. Courses are eight weeks long.

  • EVRN 771:  Project Management for Science Managers (2 credit hours)
  • EVRN 772:  Organizational Management for Science Managers (2 credit hours) 
  • EVRN 773:  Management of People in Science Organizations (2 credit hours)
  • EVRN 774:  Financial Management in Science Organizations (2 credit hours)
  • EVRN 775:  Organizational Communication for Science Managers (2 credit hours)
  • EVRN 776:  Law, Ethics, and IP for Science Managers (2 credit hours)

The courses are offered both online and in-person – late afternoon at the KU Edwards Campus – for maximum flexibility.

Key Competencies
Students who graduate with the science manager certificate will leave the program with following key competencies:

  • An overview of basic patent law, the patent process, patent interpretation and intellectual property law. Addresses elements of employment and business law, regulatory standards, and codes of conduct.
  • Become familiar with current project management techniques and their real world application.
  • Learn the difference between management and leadership, how to assess their organizations' culture, and how to build collaborative relationships with coworkers at all levels.
  • Improve the effectiveness of written and oral communication, including technical writing of project and research proposals, scientific presentations, and workplace communications.
  • Interpret and understand basic financial statements; how to make good decisions based on them; essential accounting concepts and characteristics of accounting systems; and budgeting/forecasting in a science-based organization.
  • Incorporating management of scientists and technicians as part of an integrated team, conflict management, recruitment and interviewing, professional development, performance management, and an overview of human resource law and compliance.

This certificate can be taken two ways to meet your career goals:

  • By earning academic credit through this Science Manager Graduate Certificate, comprised of six eight-week courses, two credit hours each, at the KU Edwards Campus.
  • By earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through the Science Manager Certification Program, comprised of six required modules which meet for two sessions per week, from KU Professional & Continuing Education.
