Mathematics Education:

A. Susan Gay, associate professor, joined the KU faculty in January 1991. Previously, she was the mathematics state supervisor for the Oklahoma State Department of Education and a mathematics teacher in Stillwater, OK Public Schools. From Oklahoma State University, she holds a BS degree in mathematics, a MS degree in secondary education with emphasis in mathematics, and an EdD in curriculum and instruction with emphasis in middle/secondary mathematics education.

She served as president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators from 1999 to 2001 and currently is the AMTE Conference Director. She previously served as a member of the Board of Examiners for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Susan Gay specializes in middle and secondary mathematics education.

Research

Her research interests are students’ knowledge of mathematical concepts, students’ understanding of mathematics vocabulary, mathematical literacy, and teacher professional development. She has published research in School Science and Mathematics, Middle School Journal, Mathematics Teacher, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, and PRIMUS: Problems, Resources, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies and has presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings and national and regional conferences of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
