KU Edwards Campus Enrollment Increases

Feb. 21, 2008 - On its 15th anniversary, enrollment spikes in the engineering and education schools increased second semester overall enrollment at KU Edwards Campus by 3 percent. Engineering school enrollment grew by 6 percent while education enrollment increased 14 percent.

The increased number of careers requiring science, engineering and technology skills is partially fueling the increased enrollment; particularly in the constantly changing engineering field where new skill sets are in demand from employers.

“Regionally, economic demands are driving the growth in these fields, and the burgeoning areas of biosciences, biotechnology and health care,” said Dr. Bob Clark, vice chancellor of KU Edwards Campus.

Research recently conducted by an independent research firm for the Edwards Campus shows there is significant need in metropolitan Kansas City for more talent, especially in science, technology and engineering fields. During a two-month period there were, on average, 1,140 unfilled jobs in these categories. “The future is rich with opportunities that can only be realized with proper education and training,” said Ken DeSieghardt, DeSieghardt Strategic Communications, LLC, who conducted the research.

The Edwards Campus is analyzing new course offerings that will further the development of their business, engineering and technology focus. Dr. Clark adds, “The Edwards Campus is well positioned to educate tomorrow’s workforce and advance the region’s progress as a leader in business, engineering and technology.
