Sciflix - A Date Night with your Brain

SciFlix is a community outreach effort designed around taking the science, the theories, and the ethics in popular fiction and discussing it openly and honestly. Each film will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Regnier Hall Auditorium. Following the film, our moderator will introduce a panel of experts who will provide their reactions to the film and their insights in a Q&A session with event attendees.
Our mission is to entertain the public with movies and refreshments and then fan the sparks of creative and critical thinking into life.

The New England island community of Amity it dependent upon its summer vacationers to survive, but when there is mounting evidence of shark attacks, the towns businesses oppose Sherriff Brody’s recommendation to close the beaches. We’ll discuss marine biology with attention to the evolution and success of some of the world’s oldest creatures, sharks.

Origami is more than just frogs and swans. In this fascinating documentary we’ll see the amazing creations of true artists and learn about the appeal of folding amongst mathematicians and scientists. After the film, we’ll discuss how the folds of paper in origami can model the tessellations of space occurring in the universe.

Earth is a forgotten wasteland without a shred of evidence suggesting anything could survive there until a cute waste management robot with an artistic flair discovers that the planet is not as barren as it seems. Wall-E is a Pixar masterpiece about the environment, life in space, hope, and love. It also serves as a great entry to talk about any all of these.

Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet – and so does a very serious, young Leslie Nielsen. This science fiction adaptation of Shakespeare’s Tempest is often considered the first modern sci-fi film from which all others are descended. Our topic of discussion for this film is to be determined.
