SciFlix is a community outreach effort designed around taking the science, the theories, and the ethics in popular fiction and discussing it openly and honestly. Each film will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Regnier Hall Auditorium. Following the film, our moderator will introduce a panel of experts who will provide their reactions to the film and their insights in a Q&A session with event attendees.
Our mission is to entertain the public with movies and refreshments and then fan the sparks of creative and critical thinking into life.

Spring 2023 Movies
Awakenings
Rated PG-13
On Friday, March 10th at 6:30 pm, SciFlix presents, "Awakenings," a heartwarming tale that will have you reaching for a hanky faster than you can say "feel-good movie." Penny Marshall directs the extraordinary true story of Dr. Oliver Sacks (played by Robin Williams) and his innovative treatment of a group of catatonic patients who had been in a decades-long slumber following the 1917–1928 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica.
With a light touch and deft pacing, Marshall skillfully balances the somber reality of these forgotten souls with moments of levity and joy. After the film, stay for a talk with KUMC Parkinson Foundation Director, Dr. Rajesh Pahwa as we discuss the film, Parkinson’s Disease, and the drug L-Dopa.
You'll leave the theater feeling both uplifted and heartbroken, with a renewed appreciation for the preciousness of life. You’re welcome.
