STEM Conference Inspires KUEC Students, Reveals Possibilities for the Future
Five students from the KU Edwards Campus joined peers from the Lawrence campus to participate in the 2024 NDiSTEM conference in Phoenix from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The event was a resounding success, sparking inspiration and broadening horizons for attendees.
NDiSTEM, which stands for National Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), is a multidisciplinary and multicultural conference presented by the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The conference empowers participants in their STEM careers through professional development sessions, research presentations, and cultural events.
“Attending the SACNAS Conference was one of the best experiences of my educational journey,” said KUEC student Arianna Theleman. “The keynote speakers were inspiring and motivated me to keep working hard for what I’m passionate about.”
Another student, Gia Luc Vo, reflected on the diverse backgrounds of the scientists whose contributions have shaped their fields. “There was so much to take in at the conference. I wished I could have cloned myself and done it all,” he said.
Luc Vo also highlighted the career opportunities available at the conference. “The highlight of the trip was exploring internships and student research at various companies. I discovered many fascinating biotech companies offering opportunities I could utilize.”
For Yenny Feng Wu, the most valuable aspect was building connections with scientists and learning about internships and graduate programs. “Hearing people’s journeys and gaining insight into the next steps in my career path was both inspiring and helpful,” she said. Feng Wu also described the conference as a transformative experience that gave her a profound sense of belonging in STEM. “Being surrounded by others from challenging backgrounds who are thriving in this field renewed my confidence that I can succeed too,” she shared.
The Edwards Campus students who attended the conference are part of the KUEC STEM Forward Scholars program. This initiative provides tailored services such as advising, mentoring, professional development, and networking opportunities. To learn more, visit STEM Forward Scholars Program.
“I never would have been able to attend this conference without the support of the STEM Forward Scholars Program,” Theleman said. “I’m so grateful to have benefited from this opportunity!”
