Criminal Justice Students Explore British Legal History in London

The School of Professional Studies launched its first faculty-led study abroad trip in July, taking a group of Criminal Justice students to London for a weeklong immersion into the history and influence of the British legal system.

The itinerary was rich with academic and cultural experiences. Students toured Scotland Yard to examine modern policing practices, explored the Tower of London to learn about its legacy as a prison and site of execution, and observed a triple-murder case at the UK Supreme Court. They also toured the Houses of Parliament for a closer look at British legislative processes and visited the National Archives’ MI5 exhibit for insight into intelligence and national security operations.

Beyond academics, students enjoyed a Thames River cruise, took in iconic sights like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, and sampled local cuisine. They quickly learned to navigate the Underground and mostly remembered to “look right” before crossing the street.

“Academic travel broadens perspective—and this itinerary was packed with history and cultural insight,” said Susan Whitford, program director and one of two faculty leaders.

“One day we sat in at the Old Bailey (court) on a murder trial with the defense cross examining the London Metropolitan Police detective inspectors on their investigation of a crime, “Whitford said, “Another day we listened to appeals for several cases at the Royal Courts of Justice. The students were fascinated.”

The CRIM students raved about the experience.

“It was more than I could have hoped for – a wonderful mix of being in class and being immersed in local culture. I even making life-long friends,” said Gracie Bathel.

For Vivi Echeverria, the experience underscored the value of learning beyond the classroom. “I met so many amazing people, from KU and the local community, making it truly one of the best weeks of my life.”

London’s cosmopolitan character added another layer to the students’ study abroad experience. “We were able to have a truly global experience,” said Emma Holloway. “We were exposed not only to English culture, but to many others as well.”

“It was an amazing and successful opportunity for the KU Criminal Justice Program students,” said Whitford. “They are already talking about next summer's travel abroad trip planned for Perth, Australia!
