Edward Campus Recognizes Its December Graduates
While the annual graduation ceremony doesn’t happen until May, Dean Stuart Day, Baby Jay, staff members, and family were on hand recently to celebrate Edwards Campus students who completed their degrees at the end of the fall semester.
According to Amy Neufeld, assistant dean, the fall class includes 155 graduates– 85 received graduate degrees and 70 undergraduate degrees. Graduates’ future plans include continuing careers, looking for a job or beginning work on an advanced degree.
Alex Fraser, from Overland Park, just completed his Bachelor of Psychology with a minor in Sociology and has plans to start working on his Master of Social Work right away. He has been working at the Welcome and Success Center on campus and will continue in that role.
Alex, who uses a wheelchair as a result of a spinal cord injury in 2014, says classes at the Edwards Campus have been a good fit for him.
“I wanted the flexibility of being part-time because schoolwork takes me a little bit longer to get done, as I don’t have use of my hands and I’m not able to write,” Alex said. “The campus and the faculty have been very accommodating for me.”
Stephanie Alexander, from Belton, graduated with a Bachelor of Art in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies. She’s currently completing an internship and in February will sit for the required national testing to receive her ASL Interpreting Certificate. “From there, I will look for employment as an ASL interpreter,” Stephanie said.
According to Stephanie, she loved how close she got to other students and her teachers at the Edwards Campus. She started as a full-time student and eventually went part-time to accommodate her busy schedule.
“I really enjoyed having a close relationship with my counselors and my teachers because they are how I made it through school. My counselor, Nigyar (Alves), was amazing at KU Edwards!”
